The sun sets over the Portuguese coast as Arctic Monkeys take the stage at the renowned NOS Alive Festival. This 2023 headline performance captures the Sheffield quartet at a fascinating point in their career, blending their established rock anthems with the sophisticated, cinematic sound of their recent work.
Kicking off with the moody, atmospheric 'Sculptures of Anything Goes' from their album 'The Car,' the band immediately sets a dramatic tone. However, they waste no time reminding the massive crowd of their high-energy roots, launching into the explosive 'Brianstorm' and the irresistibly catchy 'Snap Out of It.' The setlist is a masterclass in pacing, weaving together different eras of their discography. Fans are treated to beloved classics like 'The View From the Afternoon' and 'Fluorescent Adolescent,' alongside the slick, desert-rock grooves of 'AM' hits such as 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?' and 'Do I Wanna Know?'.
Frontman Alex Turner is in his element, exuding a cool, confident charisma that has come to define their live shows. The performance is a testament to their evolution, showcasing both the raw, frenetic energy that first made them famous and the polished, lounge-inflected musicianship of their more recent albums. The encore delivers a powerful finale, with their iconic cover of John Cooper Clarke's 'I Wanna Be Yours' leading into the explosive one-two punch of 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' and 'R U Mine?'. This concert is a definitive statement from a band that continues to challenge expectations while still delivering the electrifying rock show their fans adore, solidifying their status as one of the most vital live acts of their generation.
