In June 2017, Polish black/death metal band Behemoth—genre pioneers with The Satanist (2014), earning a Grammy nomination and over 500,000 copies sold—performed for Rockpalast, WDR's legendary series launched in 1974 as a platform for live heavy music broadcasts. Their hour-long set, captured professionally at Gebäude 9 in Cologne, embodied their European tour climax, where Adam "Nergal" Darski's aggressive riffs merged with Zbigniew "Inferno" Promiński's drum power and theatrical elements to spark collective ecstasy before a small audience. Featuring tracks like "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel", "Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer", and "O Father O Satan O Sun!", this show highlighted their leadership in modern extreme metal, turning the studio into a realm of rebellion and unity.
