Brazilian maestro Criolo delivered a captivating performance for Tiny Desk Brasil, marking a significant moment of celebration and reflection in his illustrious career. This special session saw the acclaimed singer-songwriter reunite with the original musicians who contributed to his groundbreaking 2011 album, "Nó na Orelha," now celebrating its 15th anniversary. This seminal record proved to be a turning point, propelling Criolo onto the national stage and solidifying his unique mark on Brazilian music.
Criolo himself admitted to a mix of fear and immense gratitude upon receiving the Tiny Desk invitation, acknowledging the weight and prestige of such a "document." Under the musical direction of Daniel Ganjaman, a key producer on "Nó na Orelha," the band meticulously crafted a setlist that included three tracks from the anniversary album—"Subirusdoistiozin," "Não Existe Amor em SP," and "Sucrilhos"—alongside "Ogum Ogum" from "Sobre Viver." Ganjaman expertly adapted these pieces for the intimate setting, bringing out subtleties often lost in larger concert venues and introducing backing vocals from Jamah and Daiane, a new element for their live setup.
The performance served as a poignant journey back to Criolo's roots. Born and raised in Grajaú, São Paulo, Kleber Cavalcante Gomes began writing verses as a child, honing his craft in rap battles before his 2006 debut as Criolo Doido. He reflects on the rare opportunity to reconnect with his voice across different life stages, from childhood to his rap beginnings. Criolo's musical trajectory has seen him expand beyond rhythmic poetry, embracing genres like samba, yet he humbly credits rap for bringing him to this moment, viewing it as a continuous source of inspiration and daily challenge for 38 years.
