Gorillaz, Damon Albarn’s project since ’98, is this wild blend of electronic, hip-hop, and alt-rock where virtual characters come to life through music. Their gig on June 21, 2018, at Toyosu PIT in Tokyo was all about crafting a sonic kaleidoscope. Albarn’s voice, sometimes soft and melancholic, sometimes sharp and full of energy, set the vibe, while synths, guitars, and beats merged into a layered sound. The band, with a bunch of guest musicians, kept a rhythm that was chill yet gripping. The lights, shifting from neon to warm, amped up the mood, and the venue’s acoustics made every note feel almost tangible. The crowd, swaying, seemed to dive right into this animated musical world.
