In April 2017, Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard—led by Stu Mackenzie and at the peak of their tour supporting Flying Microtonal Banana—delivered an intimate session for KEXP in the Seattle studio. Their April 10 performance became one of the series' most energetic: the band—Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Skinner, Michael Cavanagh, and Eric Moore—at full strength crafted a chaotic yet hypnotic flow, where guitar riffs intertwined with drum storms and keyboard textures, vocals adding mad charm. Captured professionally, the set caught them in a transitional period, where psychedelic groove with garage rock and kraut elements evoked an endless jam even in studio confines. This gig—pure King Gizzard magic: no excess words, just instrumental dialogue and energy, every note breathing freedom and chaos.
