Royal Blood, the British duo since 2013, flips what you think rock can be, dishing out huge blues-rock and garage rock with just two instruments. Their set on August 30, 2015, at Reading Festival in Reading, England, was all about how they bring the house down. Mike Kerr sang with such grit and fire, his voice swinging from fierce to melodic, like the engine of the whole show. His bass riffs, run through pedals, sounded like an army of guitars, and Ben Thatcher’s drums hit like the heart of a storm. The open stage’s acoustics made the sound massive, and the lights, shifting from red to white, played up the mood swings. The crowd, screaming and jumping, felt like they were part of this sonic hurricane.
