Silverchair, the Aussie band that crashed into grunge and alt-rock in the mid-‘90s, already knew how to deliver a sound that hit you deep. Their set on May 19, 1997, at Pinkpop in Landgraaf, Netherlands, was all about that young, raw power. Daniel Johns sang with such grit and passion, his voice flipping from fierce to melancholic, like the heart of the show. His and Ben Gillies’ guitars built thick riffs, while Chris Joannou’s bass and drums added a rhythm that slammed into your chest. The open stage’s acoustics made the sound huge, and the lights, shifting from red to blue, played up the mood swings. The crowd, screaming and rocking, felt like they were part of this musical storm.
